Man United Vs FC Basel Players Ratings And Man Of The Match. The First LOSS In the Champions League

It wasn’t an easy match for Manchester United, even though Manchester United had almost 75% possession in the first hour, 5 corners, and 9 shots were 3 of them were on target. However, in the second half, FC Basel was a totally different team and they were attacking all the time and fighting for a win.

It was clear Manchester United’s players weren’t  fighting for a win, but most probably just playing a match. We lacked the winning mentality today even though the qualification is guaranteed. We didn’t have the will to win as much as FC Basel had, and that was the reason we lost.

Our players’ ratings are as the following:

Romero: Nothing much to do in the first half, but in the second half Basel was attacking he had a couple of saves and clearances. Had a world class save in the 76th minute. Can’t be blamed for Basel’s goal. 6/10

Smalling: Nothing much to do with Man United dominating the game. But in the second half he helped defensively but failed to block the ball who lead to Lang’s goal. 6/10

Rojo: a Great comeback from a long-term injury! nothing much to do defensively. Had a great long shot that hit the post, and saved Man United from a goal in the 72nd minutes. Welcome back! 8/10

Darmian:  We didn’t see him playing a lot today or helping in the offense. Not his best match at all. 5/10

Blind: Was active on his side and trying to help going forward. Was able to do better in Lang’s goal. 6/10

Herrera:  Saved Manchester United from a dangerous chance for Basel. Calm much defensively. 7/10

Pogba: was creative in the midfield and going forward. One of the very few players who were trying today. 7/10

Fellaini:  One of Man United’s best players. Two attempts to score on the 12th,16th, and 43rd minutes, and was helping defensively as well. 7/10

Lingard:  Was running all the time and trying to get into the 18-yard area, but couldn’t. Average match for Lingard. 6/10

Martial: Was one of the main sources of danger for Basel’s defense. Had one long shot attempt in the 43rd minute, and it touched the bar and deflected. Also had a great run and chance to score one minute later, but Basel’s keeper saved it. Couldn’t make the difference though. 6/10

Lukaku:  Missed one on one chance at the beginning of the match in the 12th minute. Not so dangerous today and wasn’t sharp. 4/10

Subs:

Matic:  Tried to add an extra defense layer in order not to concede a goal. Tried to do his best. 6/10

Rashford: Tried to score and had a chance in the 73rd minute, but didn’t. Didn’t really impress. 5/10

Zlatan:  Like Rashford, he wasn’t able to make the difference. 5/10

Man of the match: The man of the match is clearly not from Manchester United, but the best United player today was Fellaini in my opinion. He was present in the defense and offense and tried to do

Jose Mourinho (Manager): It seemed that he didn’t want to win, but didn’t want to lose as well. Mourinho tried to win but just wanted to secure a point that will secure the first place in the table, regardless of the last match. He is thinking about the busy schedule as well. But it led to a historical loss against Basel. The players weren’t in their top form at all. 5/10
