After the 0-0 draw against Sweden today, Monday, Italy is official outside of next year’s world cup, 2018, in Russia after losing to Sweden 1-0 in aggregation, which means Matteo Darmian will miss the tournament.
On the other hand, Victor Lindelof, Manchester United’s most expensive player, has officially qualified for the first time with his national team, Sweden, to the World Cup after Sweden controlled the match, even though Italy had almost 75% possession, and had a lot of attempts on target.
Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup is the first since more than 60 years, after Italy was one of the main World Cup competitors, and had recently won the trophy back in 2006, in addition to three other world cup trophies.
Italy’s failure to qualify for the world cup will be the end of an era of Italy’s golden generation such as Gianluigi Buffon and Daniele De Rossi who are expected to announce their retirement from international football soon.
Anyways, congratulations and good luck for Victor Lindelof, and hard luck to Matteo Darmian.
