5 Reasons For Manchester United’s Loss Against Basel

Manchester United has lost to Swiss side, FC Basel, on Wednesday in the Champions League after a disappointing performance by the Red Devils.

Manchester United needed just one point to secure the first place in their group stage, but the Red Devils missed the chance to secure the first place early which means Man United has to win another match against CSKA Moscow to secure the first place.

Manchester United was able to win against FC Basel, but several reasons were behind the disappointing performance which lead to Manchester United fall in Swisszerland, and we are listing the main 5 reasons.

Substituting Pogba

Paul Pogba was Man United’s best player on the pitch, where in the first half he contributed in creating several chances and dominated the midfield, and getting off the pitch in an early time for Matic, where Manchester United lost their main creative player in the midfield where Mourinho was playing three players with more of a defensive role.

Blind and Darmian

Blind and Darmian where the worst players on the pitch for Manchester United and couldn’t do their offensive job to help going forward, and where most of the times marking Basel’s wingers Renato Steffen and Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The duo failed to replace Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young as a left and right back defenders and they were a danger to their team more than a danger to Basel, and Blind failed to clear the ball from Lang which led to Basel’s only goal.

Lukaku

Lukaku was maybe the most disappointing player on the pitch alongside Blind and Darmina. Lukaku missed several chances and was so poor in the third half, unlike Zlatan Ibrahimovic who was going to score when he was subbed in.

Ibra’s return had to trigger Lukaku to play better and compete with Zlatan, but Lukaku didn’t improve at all.

Wrong Rotations

Jose Mourinho had to start his best players in that match, to secure an early qualification and first place, and rest the players from playing Cska Moscow’s match.

Mourinho may justify the rotation by the busy Premier League fixture, but an early qualification for the group 16 will make Manchester United play one less match with the senior players.

Matic’s absence in the first half.

Mourinhio decided to rest Matic and play Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini in the midfield to do the defensive duties, but all the defensive work was on Herrera where  Fellaini was always going forward to help in the air balls and attack due to his height.

Especially after Pogba’s substitution, Manchester United lost the connections between the offense and defense and Manchester United played in a kind of, parked bus, plan.
